ALEXANDER MERTICK

Alexander J. Mertick passed away on Thursday January 17, 2008 at the Moose Jaw Union Hospital. Alex was born in Montreal, Que., on March 28, 1916 to a Romanian couple, Mike and Ravecca Mertick.  Such began Alex’s life highlighted by his marriage to Helen (Petrescue) and four children: Diane (Alby) Williams, Gerald (Elva), Clifford (Brigitte), and George (deceased in childhood).  Alex’s joy was extended to grandchildren: Jayda (Justin) Mercier, Diedre (Dom) Rubino, Jon, Thad, Jeff (Elsia), Kelly (Graham) Sluth, Alexis, and four great-grandchildren:  Skye, Summer, Valencia , and Abbey.  He was predeceased by Lily Iliana Colcerin, George, Grace (Petrisor), Annie (Petrisor), and John; he is survived by a sister Lorraine (Crane) and sister-in-law Hattie Mertick. Recently, Alex reflected on his “very good retirement” from the farm, Lake Diefenbaker saw many a fish taken, but what brought Dad more satisfaction than word puzzles and knitted coat hangers and even more love for the violin, was conversing about Jehovah and Paradise Earth.  Though educated little, he was a most intelligent and common sense person.  He taught his children to respect life including animal life.  He was humble hearted and would never turn away a neighbour or stranger in need.  He will be “missed”.  Special thanks to Dr. Brian Sanderson for his compassionate care over the years. The Service of Remembrance will be held at W.J.Jones & Son Chapel on Monday January 21, 2008 at 2:00 pm.  James Sikorski, minister of Jehovah Witnesses will officiate. Memorials to the Sask.Heart & Stroke Foundation, 2360 2nd Ave., Regina, S4R 1A6, or the Sask. Lung Association, 1231 8th St.E., Saskatoon, S7H 0S5, would be appreciated. In living memory of Alex, a tree will be planted in Besant Park by W.J.Jones & Son Funeral Home.
