DONALD DAWSON

DONALD GERALD DAWSON (SOMOLENKO), beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother passed away Wednesday, July 12, 2006 at the age of 76, with his family by his side.  Born in Weyburn on April 16, 1930, Don attended Grand Meadow Country School and Verwood High School.  Don grew up in the Viceroy, Verwood district. He met Wilma while working in Regina and they married on June 5, 1953. They moved to Moose Jaw in 1955 where he worked for Excelo Appliance and later purchased the business in 1976. Don’s son Jerry purchased the store in 1994. Don was predeceased by his wife, Wilma Dawson – (1995), father, George Somolenko – (1982), mother, Minnie Somolenko – (1983), mother-in-law, Clara Hayes, father-in-law, Bill Hayes, and brother-in-law, Andy Verhaeghe – (1996).  Don is survived by his daughter, Donna (Bruno) Sculli and their children: Miranda, Marissa and Michelle – all of Grand Coulee, his son, Jerry (Linda) Dawson – Moose Jaw and daughter, Julie (Kirk) Onrait - Calgary, sister, Phyllis Verhaeghe - Moose Jaw, brother-in-law, Cliff (Dorcus) Hayes – Saskatoon, his great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews who loved their uncle. Don is also survived by a very special friend, Lyla Knight. Don loved to take winter vacations to Arizona, Hawaii and Las Vegas.  He enjoyed playing “bid 500” with his family and found great enjoyment being with his granddaughters and watching them dance at the Italian Pavilion during Mosaic in Regina. He hardly missed a day of meeting his close friends for coffee.  Following cremation at Prairie Memorial Crematorium, a Memorial Service will be held at W.J.Jones & Son Funeral Chapel on Friday, July 14, 2006 at 1:30 p.m.  Memorialization will take place at a later date in the Prairie Memorial Columbarium.  In lieu of flowers, memorials to a charity of one’s choice would be appreciated.  In living memory of Donald, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W.J.Jones & Son Funeral Home.
