CHARLIE DUERS

ROBERT CHARLES “CHARLIE” DUERS.  It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Charlie on October 15, 2004 with his loving family by his side. Charlie was born in Newcastle on Tyne, England on July 29, 1917.  His father worked for the United Bus Company and his mother stayed home to raise the family, four boys and two girls.  Charlie was a good student and avid sportsman in his school years.  When old enough he delivered the morning and afternoon newspapers to earn extra money to help with the family expenses.  After graduating with honours he was recruited to play professional soccer for the Sheffield Wednesday Football Club.  His football career was cut short when drafted by the Royal Air Force as World War II began.  He was then posted to Swift Current, Saskatchewan in 1941 where he met Audrey Winget, his wife of 61 years.  After the war, in 1954, the family immigrated to Edmonton, where Charlie gained employment with Canadian Pittsburg Industries.  After 28 years with this company and several transfers across Canada, he retired in his last relocation – Moose Jaw. In his spare time, Charlie loved to play cards, golf, fish, hunt, curl, camp, and all types of music but most important he loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Audrey; three daughters: Margaret (Wayne) Sorenson – Edmonton, Joyce (Gerry) Regier – Winnipeg and Lesley Flynn – Medicine Hat; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, one brother, John (Kathy) and two sisters: Margaret Duers and Elsie Walton – all of England, one sister-in-law, Lorraine Winget – Kelowna, and many nephews, nieces and friends.  Charlie was predeceased by his mother, Mary, father, Bob, and brothers, Frank and Leslie - all of England. A Celebration of Charlie’s Life will be held at Minto United Church, Moose Jaw on Tuesday, October 19, 2004 at 1:30 p.m.  Reverend John Carley will officiate. Memorialization will take place privately at Prairie Memorial Columbarium.  Army, Navy & Airforce Veterans Funeral Rites will be conducted at the Church.  The family gives special thanks to the wonderful staff at Pioneer Lodge for their kindness, support and care in making Charlie’s last 1½ years at the lodge a home. As an expression of sympathy a contribution may be made to Pioneer Lodge, 1000 Albert Street, Moose Jaw, S6H 2Y2 or to a charity of your choice. In living memory of Charlie, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W.J.Jones & Son Funeral Home.
