WALTER CUMMING

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Walter Cumming.  Predeceased by his wife, Edna (Ings) in 1998, he leaves to mourn his children: Ellen (Les) Doig – Parkbeg; Robert (Penny) Cumming – Mortlach; Karen (Bruce Martin) – Nova Scotia; grandchildren:  Rosalyn (Phil) Langford – Fort Qu’Appelle; Janine (Tom) Whyte – Medicine Hat; Alison (David) Banman – Swift Current; Brad Doig – Mortlach; Tristin Cumming – Moose Jaw; and Nolan Cumming – Mortlach; and great-granddaughter, Samantha Banman. Walter also leaves to mourn sisters and brothers-in-law, Mildred Wotherspoon – Melville;  Wally Miller – Rockglen; Roland and Marie Sherbina – Weyburn; and Gus and Erma Thuillier – Edmonton; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends and neighbours who knew Walter and were part of his life. Walter was born on June 23, 1916 in the Caron-Mortlach district to Walter and Ellen Cumming and attended Sweet Grass School.  In 1945 he took over the family farm and in 1951 married a young Mortlach teacher named Edna Ings of the Cedoux district. Together they farmed and raised three children, through good times and bad.  Dad devoted his life to working the land and raising Hereford cattle.  In later years Mom and Dad were able to travel to Scotland to visit the birthplaces of Dad’s parents and visit family members in the “Old Country”, as he always referred to it.  Dad had always enjoyed playing the “fiddle” and in 1978 he joined the newly formed Mortlach Fiddlers.  Over the next 30 years, he and Mom were able to travel and meet new friends as Dad performed with the group.  He experienced immense joy and personal satisfaction from being a part of the Mortlach Fiddlers. Funeral Services will be held at W.J.Jones & Son Chapel on Wednesday January 5, 2005 at 1:30 pm.  Della Ferguson will officiate. Memorialization will take place at a later date.  Memorials to the Canadian Cancer Society, 61B Ross St.W., Moose Jaw, S6H 2M2, or to the Red Cross, would be appreciated.  In living memory of Walter, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W.J.Jones & Son Funeral Home.

Lenore Pettapiece - Trochu, AB

Gordon, Sharon and Nora Anderson - Caron, SK: Our condolences to all of Walter's family.

Ginny Jackson - Moose Jaw, SK: I am thinking of all who knew Walter at this sad time.  I had the great privilege of visiting with him--or at least catching one of his great smiles--as I spent time visiting the residents at Providence Place.  Walter loved his family, his fiddle and his farming and I so enjoyed having little chats with him over this past year.  May you begin to reflect on the memories of Walter with warmth  and smiles in the coming months. Ginny Jackson

Terry Grajczyk - Zehner, SK: Thinking of you at this time, Robert and Penny and family, and wishing peace.

Kay & John Hoehn and family - Saskatoon, SK:  Sincere sympathy to Robert, Karen, Ellen and their families - with fond remembrances of good times at Joe McIntyre or Cumming households.

B McIntyre and Family - Ft. St.John, BC: Walter was a man of principles.  As those principles were sound and included the minimal use of harsh words,  Walter was able to stick to his principles much closer than anyone I know without making enemies.  Walter always maintained everything he was responsible for in good order,  be it mechanical,  animal husbandry,  farm lands, or human relations.  His membership in the Mortlach Fiddlers and the Masonic Lodge are just two of the things that show his appreciation of bringing happiness to others.  Walter has left behind a pair of boots that will be very loose fitting on anyone brash enough to try them on. My sympathies go to all his family members and, indeed, to all who knew Walter.

Vonnie and Bernie Forbes - Victoria, BC: Our condolences to Walter's family.  The Cummings were close neighbors to the Fergusons and one of Walter's sisters was my aunt (Nancy) and one was Bernie's aunt (Margaret). We enjoyed his part in the Mortlach Fiddlers and the times he joined us in church with his fiddle.
