ARCHIBALD COCKBURN

MR. ARCHIBALD ERNEST COCKBURN passed away at Providence Place, Moose Jaw, Monday, June 28, 2004, at the age of 85 years. Arch was born September 9, 1918, at his parental home at Briercrest, the second oldest child of Bill and Rachel Cockburn.  Archie had many happy memories of his home life; loving parents, three sisters and two brothers.  He was educated at Briercrest School. Arch enjoyed small town life and had many amusing remembrances of school with his brothers, sisters, cousins and friends.  He was active in sports, including a softball team, which frequented many small town sports days.  Archie was an avid curler and hockey player.  After school, Arch farmed with his father and brother, George.  He joined the Canadian Army in May 1941 and took his military training in Canada and England before going to France in 1944 with the 6th AntiTank Regiment.  Due to an injury suffered while on active service in France, he was returned to Canada where he received a Medical Discharge in February 1945. Arch returned to his original farm and continued farming with his father and brother.  After his father’s death, Arch farmed with his brother, George.  They enjoyed a particularly close relationship and shared a sense of humor and cooperation.  In 1984, Arch traveled to Europe and visited the family home of his grandparents in Cockburnspath, Scotland, and the grave of his brother, James Ward Cockburn, in France. Arch continued actively in farming with his nephew Jim.  He was known for his kindness and humor and enjoyed a particularly close relationship with his nieces and nephews.  He was a patient and loving person to whom family meant a great deal.  He will be deeply missed by his surviving family: his loving sisters: Peg (Cec) Akins of Harris, Sask., and Marion Lawrence of Ridgedale, Sask.; nieces and nephews: Janet (Rich) Hauff, Dennis (Vicky) Tyson, Diane (Everett) Evison, Doug (Kathy) Tyson, Eleanor (Keith) Akins, Lynne Cockburn, Phyllis (Tom) Havard, Jim (Fay) Cockburn; great-nieces and nephews: Dale Hauff, Lori Hauff, John Tyson, Brian Tyson, Yolanda Charron, Patrick Charron, Michelle Danyluk, Terry Tyson, Mark Akins, Leanne Thompson, Darcy Millar, Matthew Parisian, Erin Havard, Suzanne Havard, Ward Cockburn, Darin Cockburn and Jamie Cockburn, as well as many great-great nieces and nephews.  Arch was predeceased by his parents, William James Cockburn (1969) and Rachel Mae (McLaughlan) Cockburn (1963), brother, James Ward Cockburn (1944), brother, George Daniel Cockburn (1997), and sister, Vivian Lenore (Cockburn) Jaques (2002).  A Service of Remembrance will be held at the Briercrest United Church on Friday, July 2, 2004 at 1:30 p.m.  Reverend Desmond Patton will officiate.  Cremation has taken place with memorialization at Briercrest Cemetery.  Memorials to the Briercrest United Church Memorial Fund would be appreciated.  In living memory of Arch, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W.J.Jones & Son Funeral Home.

Fran Edwards - Regina, Sask. : With heartfelt sympathy in your loss. I remember Archy very well during the years I grew up at Briercrest and of going through the Cockburn farm yard to go to a wiener roast in the coulee. Fran Edwards (Stirton)

Laura Stark - Pitt Meadows, BC:  Lynne, Eleanor and Jim; My deepest sympathies to you and your families in the loss of your beloved Uncle.  As a young girl who enjoyed many 'overnights' in your home, I know how close your whole family was. My memories of Uncle Arch are of a quiet, gentle man who was always kind enough to spend a few minutes in conversation, even though we were 'just kids'.  You are in our thoughts and prayers. Laura & Mike (nee Nettleton)

Linda Tease - Regina, SK: With heartfelt sympathy in your loss.
