Laurel (Dyer) Krueger and family: Having always lived a distance from Bertha, my memories of her are synonymous with the excitement of family visits.  After she got her job at the hospital, I looked forward to sitting with her and hearing the stories about her "little ones"; the children she took such extraordinary care of.  There always seemed to be one that she developed an affection for; undoubtedly the one who needed the extra care.

That love and caring was evident with her nieces and nephews.  No matter how large the numbers grew, she made sure there was a little something given for birthdays and Christmas.  The homemade gifts were the best.  Bert was extremely talented with needlework and crafts.  A little doll she made has always had a special place on my dresser.  Now, it will have an even greater place in my heart.

Bertha was also an inspiration.  At a time in her life, when many others would be content with the status quo, Bert gave up her job at the "bag factory" to realize her dream.

Bert has had a special place in the lives of many children; her nieces and nephews, friends, and patients in the hospital.  She'll be remembered with love for the love she gave. I would like to close with a poem that I feel describes Bert.

            One hundred years from now

            It will not matter

What kind of car I drove

What kind of house I lived in,

How much money I had in my bank account,

Nor what my clothes looked like.

But one hundred years from now

The world may be a little better

            Because I was important

In the life of a child.    - Anon.

Todd Jones - Burlington, Ontario, :  Although I never met Bertha I have heard many wonderful things about her from my mother (Elizabeth Dyer-McCurdy) and my grandfather (Lester Dyer). They spoke of a kind compassionate person, someone who had hopes and dreams and also had enough courage to go after those hopes and dreams. Please accept my sympathy for your loss. I believe Bertha, and her various other siblings, came from a time and a place which our society should look back on. Just as my grandfather (Lester James Dyer)  is etched in my mind forever, I believe Bertha's memory will live on forever with the many peoples lives she touched.
