ROY BIRTWISTLE

Roy Birtwistle passed away peacefully March 11, 2003 at the age of 86 years.  Roy was born June 20, 1916 in the Providence Hospital, Moose Jaw. He grew up on the family farm north of Ernfold and attended Rochdale School.  Roy only left the farm to serve in the Air Force from 1943-45 and continued to farm until retiring to Moose Jaw in 1984.  He married Florence Reid on March 1, 1945 and they raised three daughters.  Roy was a member of the Calderbank Wheat Pool Committee, the Ernfold United Church Board, was a Director of the Morse Co-op, and an Aquadell 4-H Beef Leader.  He was active in farm organizations, the Central Butte Fair Board, and the Ernfold Senior Citizens. Roy and Florence loved to dance, especially square dancing. Roy also enjoyed playing cards and games.  Since moving to Moose Jaw he was a member of Minto United Church, Minto’s choir, the Sons and Daughters of the Pioneers Choir, Golden Voices Choir, both Seniors Clubs and the Waterlogs Swim Group. Roy loved to travel throughout Canada and the United States, also visiting Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and Europe.  He will be remembered for his smile, thoughtfulness, and always thinking of others before himself. Roy is predeceased by his parents, Alice and George Birtwistle; brother, Stan and his wife, Chris; and son-in-law, Ernie Wesolowski.  He leaves to mourn his loving wife of 58 years, Florence; three daughters, Linda (Doug) Hayner; Cheryl (Willis) Wingert; and Gail Wesolowski; five grandchildren: Jacqueline, Richard, Russell, Krista, and Kevin;  sister, Mary (John) Green; many cousins, nieces and nephews; as well as special friends, Grant and Julie Rourke.  A Celebration of Roy’s life will be held at Minto United Church, 1036 Seventh Ave. N.W., Moose Jaw on Friday, March 14, 2003 at 2:00 pm.  Gary Johnson will officiate. Memorials to Minto United Church Memorial Fund, the Union Hospital Foundation, 455 Fairford ST.E., Moose Jaw, S6H 1H3, or a charity of choice would be appreciated. In living memory of Roy, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W.J.Jones & Son Funeral Home.
