GEORGE ARMITAGE

GEORGE ADDY ARMITAGE was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan on September 23, 1922 to Addy and Emily Armitage. The family lived on Skeena Street near the Moose Jaw River until he was around thirteen.  He had great memories of swimming all summer and playing hockey all winter on the frozen ice.  George competed provincially in swimming and diving.  From those years he donated countless hours coaching these talents to other young people. As many will know he enjoyed golfing and curling as well. He was very active in every sport.  George started work as a “call boy” for C.P. Railway and then apprenticed in boiler making for five years.  During this time he served three years in the Navy on the destroyer HMCS “Saskatchewan”.  It ran from St.John, Nfld. to Londonderry, Ireland. They were also in action in the English Channel. From there he was stationed at HMCS Cornwallis, N.S. where he was trained as a physical instructor.  George returned home after the War, fell in love and married Hazel MacDonald on September 13, 1947.  They took advantage of their C.P.R pass, made many trips to Vancouver and Vermont.  He left the C.P.R in 1956 and worked as a welder at P.F.R.A until 1982 when he retired at 60. George passed away at Pioneer Lodge on Monday, November 24, 2003.  He is survived by his loving wife, Hazel, daughter, Pat of Barrie, Ontario and son, Doug (Maureen) of Moose Jaw; grandchildren: Stephen Rockall (Amanda Collins) of Angus, Ontario, Angela Rockall and her son, Zendhar of Christina Lake, B.C., Jason Rockall of Regina, Jodi Ironchild of Barrie, Ont., Jay Armitage of Moose Jaw and Carrie Armitage attending University of Mary in Bismark, N.D.  George was predeceased by his mother, Emily and father, Addy, his only sister, Bernice, mother-in-law, Margaret MacDonald, father-in-law, Art MacDonald, brother-in-law, Jim (Bud) MacDonald.  A Celebration of George’s Life will be held at Minto United Church on Friday, November 28, 2003 at 1:30 p.m.  Reverend John Carley will officiate.  Royal Canadian Legion Funeral Rites will be conducted at the Church by Chuck MacMillan.  Memorialization will take place privately at Sunset Cemetery at a later time. Memorials to Pioneers Lodge, 1000 Albert Street, Moose Jaw, S6H 2Y2 or to the Alzheimer Association, #301-2550-12th Ave., Regina, S4P 3X1 would be appreciated.  In living memory of George, a tree will be planted in Wakamow Valley by W.J.Jones & Son Funeral Home.
